I just had a conversation with one of my favorite people in the world, my partner, Soul (pronouns-they/their).
They were sharing with me a new awareness of the idea of SURRENDER.
It’s a big idea in the spiritual community.
It’s an idea that’s thrown out as advice to people in a hard place, not knowing how things will turn out and not being in a place to effect direct or immediate change to a specific situation.
And it’s widely misunderstood, even by spiritually inclined people.
Surrender has a mystical attractiveness.
It’s the last resort, the one thing that we fall back on when we feel like
Okay okay okay, there’s nothing I can do, so God/universe/Creator/the Powers That Be, please take over.
And we seemingly humble ourselves to release the burden off our shoulders.
I don’t know about you, but whenever I tried to surrender from that place,
IT WAS ALWAYS SO MOTHERFUCKING HARD.
I mean JESUS.
I would “cast my burdens off” with a grimace.
I would STRUGGLE to feel peace, the FREEDOM that seemed to accompany surrender, like everyone told me it would.
I would grit my teeth, not at the situation, but in the attempt to surrender.
L o l.
It cracks me up.
Because we literally swapped out one misfortune for another.
And that’s what it is: a misfortune.
The attempt to do the damn thing and the awareness to desire to surrender is valuable is noble.
Truly.
Noble, but misunderstood.
I’m going to drop something here that could change the game.
Or not.
But I’m going to drop it anyway.
In that place of your soul,
that deep deep deeeeeep vaaaaaast place of the ACTUAL you-ness of you, the ACTUAL GOD-NESS vested in you,
there is no such thing as surrender.
Surrender is a human concept and exists ONLY in the physical world.
I repeat –
it.exists.only.in.the.human.world.
Do you see where I’m going with this?
It means you are trying to get to the god-ness within,
that FREEDOM,
that coveted PEACE,
that truly magical place that is YOUR TRUE SELF, YOUR ABSOLUTE TRUE NATURE,
using a HUMAN idea.
Or your ego, if you will.
Or logic.
Or rationale.
WHATever.
Like trying to create a hologram using only parts used in a black and white TV.
Hmmmm, something’s not right there.
Surrender, my friend, is NEVER the point.
If you make it the point, your mind will take it and run with it, and probably run you into the ground.
You get me?
Have you ever felt like this?
Tried and tried and tried to surrender,
only to realize you’re surrendering DAILY.
Only to realize you keep picking up the DAMN thing you put down yesterday, an hour ago, a freaking MINUTE ago.
The FRUSTRATION of it alllllll!!!!
Especially when you are trying to go the HIGH ROAD,
do the soul work,
own your freaking LIFE.
Jaysus.
Here’s what’s happening.
A common definition of surrender is to put something down or lift it up to God/universe/whatever.
The mind makes it a mental exercise.
You are STILL PLAYING THE GAME YOU ARE MEANT TO TRANSCEND.
EVERY PART OF YOU IS CALLING YOU INTO THE DEEEEEEPEST PART OF YOU,
THE REALEST PART OF YOUR WHOLE FREAKING EXISTENCE.
This has always been true, and ACTUALLY,
this.is.why.you.are.here.
THIS is why you came here to be in the body you chose, why you chose YOUR mind, why you chose this lifetime.
To come home.
So, if all you’re really doing is coming home, attempting to surrender is in DIRECT contradiction to what actually IS.
Let me clarify.
Your soul resides within you.
It’s the true YOU.
It’s the REAL YOU.
This is your spirit, this is what actually makes you, deeper than your personality, your community, your ethnicity, your gender.
It is your God-ness.
It is more true than your mind.
It is truer than spiritual concepts and principles and processes.
It is a place where the ONLY VEHICLE TO GET YOU THERE IS…
your choosing to be there.
It is NOT accessible by human attempts, striving, pushing, pulling, TRYING-NESS.
It is UNAVAILABLE in the playing field of our minds.
Soooooooooooo………………….
then what?
If it’s not ABOUT surrender,
if it’s not available to us by effort,
what next?
How do we GET TO THAT PLACE THAT I KEEP TALKING ABOUT,
THAT PLACE WITHIN THAT REEKS OF YOUR GOD-NESS, YOUR MAGIC, YOUR FREEDOM, YOUR ABSOLUTE PURE JOY?!
Easy.
You make space for it.
You make space to go into that place,
to venture into your depths, simply because you believe there HAS TO BE MORE THAN THIS PHYSICAL LIFE, THIS PHYSICAL WORLD, THE PHYSICAL YOU.
You make space for quiet, so you can hear the whispers of your soul.
You make space for you, so you can just freaking BE.
You make space for stillness, so you can FEEL your vastness.
You make space for space.
I promise you, when you drop in, you won’t even need to KNOW the word surrender or know it ever EXISTED, because all of your being will be agreeing vehemently with the truth that flows from within.
From that place, you are FREE.
From that place, you ARE freedom.
Once you drop in, all that there is to do, is to let it take over you.
When you let it take over you… THAT is true surrender.
It’s the human letting go into the divine,
not by trying,
but by the sheer EXPERIENCE of the divine.
And let me tell you, the divine is just HANKERING to take over you.
Patiently hankering, but hankering nonetheless.
Because it is love and it loves you.
Because it wants you to remember, you are closer to your glory and majesty than your human can ever think.
It IS you.
You ARE it.
That oneness is made possible by surrender.
Surrender is made possible by knowing experientially your god-ness.
The rest is cake.
So, let it be cake.
It gets to be that easy.
As easy as pie.
You Know if you’re ready for your spiritual knowledge to come to life.
You’ve done the struggle, the surrendering and picking back up,
the trusting and promising to trust, back to worry and doubt.
You’ve run that track enough times.
And you KNOW life is not meant to be a cycle of the same shit again and again and again.
